HTC & Orange Vegas - the cheapest full touchscreen handset to date

Orange UK have just announced the cheapest full touchscreen handset, dubbed as the Orange Vegas, which is already available for purchase at the carrier points of sale across UK or online.

The price of only 48.50 GBP for pay-as-you-go customers is a hit below the belt for handsets like the highly popular LG KP501 Cookie, which costs at least twice as much.

Well, to be honest, Vegas ain't that cute as the Cookie but its price is low enough to make you say "Deal!". The Orange Vegas reminds of the HTC Touch Viva but it doesn't nearly have the same brains or goodies under the hood.

Orange Vegas comes in pink or black and offers a 2.4" TFT touchscreen and UI that is designed exclusively for Orange. Along comes the 1.3 megapixel snapper capable of taking images and videos and the music player followed by the microSD card slot ready to host cards with up to 4 GB of memory. Also aboard is a built-in FM radio and Bluetooth.

Another nice touch is the free access to services like Bebo, Facebook and MySpace.

HTC Snap - newest QWERTY smartphone

HTC Corporation today debuted its newest QWERTY smartphone, the HTC Snap™. Designed with a set of features selected to deliver everything customers need without overwhelming them with things they don’t, the HTC Snap makes it easier than ever to stay in contact with life’s most important people.

A recent study conducted by Harris Interactive® and commissioned by HTC* found that 44% of US adults are often overwhelmed by the amount of email they receive, and over half (55%) of US adults prioritize five or fewer people with whom they communicate via email. In response to these issues, HTC’s innovative Inner Circle feature allows HTC Snap users to press a dedicated Inner Circle key to bring emails from a preselected group of people to the top of their inbox, enabling important messages to be acted upon immediately.

“Recognizing that people are being overwhelmed by an avalanche of email, the HTC Snap introduces Inner Circle, an HTC innovation that makes it easy for people to prioritize messages from the most important people in their lives at the press of a button,” said John Wang, Chief Marketing Officer, HTC Corporation. “The HTC Snap represents the latest step in HTC’s mission to create a range of innovative smartphones, each with specific benefits designed to both surprise and delight our customers.”

HTC Snap

With a slim, sleek profile designed to fit perfectly in the hand, the HTC Snap measures less than a half-inch thick (12 mm), yet it can deliver up to eight and a half hours of talk time with the standard 1500mAh battery. The full QWERTY keyboard is ergonomically designed with extra-large domed keys and responsive tactile feedback to make typing emails and text messages fast, accurate and comfortable. High-speed 3G HSPA connectivity makes it quick and easy to send pictures to friends, access favorite social networking sites, or download large files while on the go.

The HTC Snap is powerful enough for experienced business users looking for an affordable, straightforward choice for remotely synchronizing email, calendar and contacts with their Microsoft Exchange server. However, the flexible Microsoft Windows Mobile® 6.1 Standard platform allows the HTC Snap to also be simple enough for first-time smartphone users wanting to keep their family life organized.

The HTC Snap is expected to be available in select channels during the second quarter of 2009, rolling out in markets around the world throughout the second half of the year. Additionally, an unlocked version supporting HSDPA at 850/1900MHz for the US market will be made available under the name HTC S522 during the summer.

T-Mobile release dates leak, along with Sony Ericsson CS8 Cyber-shot

A dozen of expected T-Mobile phones just got their launch dates thanks to some leaked info that was posted online. Alongside with already announced handsets such as HTC Magic, Snap and Touch Pro2 (called Wing 2 in T-Mo networks), a couple of new phones were also mentioned for the first time.

Sony Ericsson CS8 Cyber-shot popped up for the first time - it's rumored to run on Android OS and will have 8.1 megapixel snapper.

The leaked T-Mobile release dates include most of the popular HTC smartphones, a bunch of Samsungs, Nokia 1661 and the Sony Ericsson's Cyber-shot CS8.

http://www.celluloco.com/home.php

Let's take a look on the list:

  • "Blade" - May 13th (a.k.a. Sidekick 2009)

  • HTC Snap - July 1st (a.k.a. HTC Maple)

  • HTC Wing II - July 22nd (a.k.a. Touch Pro 2 or HTC Rhodium)

  • HTC Magic - To be announced (a.k.a. T-Mobile G2 or HTC Sapphire)

  • Sony Ericsson CS8 - June 24th

  • Nokia 1661 (prepaid) - April 29th

  • Samsung T349 (prepaid) - May 6th

  • Samsung T239 (prepaid) - May 13th

  • Samsung T559 - July 15th

  • Samsung T469 - July 15th

  • Samsung T749 - July 22nd

  • Samsung T659 - August 19th

As you can see most of the phones will be released in July, the yet unannounced Sidekick 2009 and the prepaid Samsungs in May. The Sony Ericsson CS8 is expected in the end of June, which seems quite soon considering the fact it hasn't been announced yet.

As it's also obvious from the list - there is no confirmation of the T-Mobile G2 yet (a.k.a. HTC Magic).

Yesterday, new WAP profiles were discovered by SEMC Blog on the Sony Ericsson website. They reveal two new Cyber-shot handsets. The first one is the mentioned CS8, while the second device is CS5 - unfortunately, beside the name there is no other info available.

Surely the new additions to the Cyber-shots will be announced in the next few months and then we could tell you more about the specs sheets.

The HTC Snap runs on a 528MHz Qualcomm MSM 7225 CPU and has 192 MB of RAM. It sports a 2.4" landscape display of QVGA resolution and a 2 megapixel camera. Network connectivity is well covered with quad-band GSM support and dual-band UMTS (with HSDPA).

There will be two versions of the HTC Snap as far as 3G bands are concerned. The EMEA variation will operate on the 900/2100 MHz frequencies, while the US one will support 850/1900 MHz and will be called HTC S721.

Some of the other notable features of the HTC Snap include GPS with A-GPS support, Wi-Fi and a microSD card slot. The list of extras is completed by Bluetooth v2.0 and a trackball for the menu navigation.

The HTC Snap will start shipping in UK and US (where it will be known as HTC S721) this summer but its price is yet unknown.

T-Mobile G1 to get the coveted Cupcake update in April

W

It's finally official - the T-Mobile G1 will be getting the "cupcake" update sometime in April bringing tons of goodies - video recording, virtual on-screen keyboard, functionality and bug fixes, messaging features and more.

Sounds like good news for G1 owners - a massive update is coming soon. In April you will be able to boost your Android with the previously closed "Cupcake" functions. The new stuff includes an on-screen virtual QWERTY keyboard, the ability to save attachments from MMS, voice recorder and video capturing.

Along with the new features the package will sports huge number of bugs and stability fixes, many new menu and support options, even Bluetooth stereo streaming capability.

Your hopes for official multi-touch support however are in vain. The launch time coincide with the availability of the Vodafone's HTC Magic, which will have the "cupcake" features implemented in its software by default.
