Android security has been getting a lot more attention lately for various reasons. No one likes having their little pocket computer being stolen or lost. The Edward Snowden incident has opened our eyes to government prying the world over. Even public WiFi is starting to scare people. The bad news is that these issues won’t go away anytime soon. The good news is that there are things you can do to protect yourself starting with these apps that help improve security.
Android Device Manager

First up is the venerable Android Device Manager. This app is a must-have app not only because it’s a Google app, but because it has some useful features. It can track your lost or stolen device, ring it at max volume if you can’t find it, and even lock/wipe your
device from the web interface. This is a good way to keep your sensitive data out of the hands of others and it’s just a good tool to have. You can never be too careful.

With the subscription services, you’ll get banking mode whichencrypts your data while you do banking stuff, a whitelist feature, management of apps, safety rules (like prevention of texting while driving), and plenty of others.

This allows you to store your passwords, credit card numbers, and other sensitive info behind heavy encryption and a password. So you only really need to remember one password instead of many. It’s a little pricy at $9.99but if you have a lot of passwords, are forgetful, or just want to carry your sensitive info on you without threat of it being stolen, this is a great way to do it.

Ninja SMS is a really nifty SMS app that opens in a floating window on your home screen so you don’t need to open an app. It’s fun to use all on its own but it also has a nifty security feature that encrypts your messages so prying eyes can’t see them. It’s called Anti-NSA mode and while the pragmaticamong us know that the NSA can break pretty much any mainstream encryption, there’s no reason we should make it easy on them and Ninja SMS certainly doesn’t do that.

RedPhone :: Secure Calls

However, once you’re in a call with another person who uses this app, you’ll get a notification that you can encrypt the call.This is a great way to avoid, well, anyone that may be trying to snoop in on your phone calls. It uses WiFi or data as well, so it won’t be a burden on your minutes.

It’s cross-platform, a password generator, a clipboard cleaner, and the open source community will love that it’s 100% open source.

NoRoot Firewall

This is the only one that does all of those things that are also generally accepted as good by reviewers on the Google Play Store. As the name implies, you can set up and configure firewalls with thisapp which can help keep you safe from people trying to break in and borrow some of your information. It’s also free, which means it’s worth at least a try for most.

There are a lot more apps that can help out but have restrictions. For instance, App Ops lets you control application permissions on the latest versions of Android but it is for root users only. Similarly, most firewall apps such as Android Firewall and DroidWall –an offshoot of Android Firewall– require root access. A third awesome root app for security (and privacy) is Root Call Blocker which blocks SMS, MMS, and phone calls from select numbers. There are even more security features available if you don’t mind flashing modifications or using the Xposed Framework.
Of course, common sense is also imperative. You really shouldn’t do things like banking while on airport WiFi even if you’re on a VPN. You shouldn’t download apps from untrustworthy sources. If it feels shady or wrong, don’t do it. It also helps that, at least for malware apps, Android has a lot of built in protection that you should use. Simply don’t turn anything off in the security or privacy sections of your settings and you’ll have all the built-in Android protection which is wildly effective in keeping you safe.
